School 4th Quarter Review

June 23rd, is the last day of my school year. We have very few days left of school. I'm so sad to be leaving 7th grade behind, It's been a long and great school year. I've had so many amazing classes and teachers this year.
This school year I really loved all my teachers. I loved all my core teachers because they each found different ways to make learning fun. During music this year learned how to play the keyboard. My partner Parker and I had so much fun. In Spanish I loved all the people in my class. They helped me make learning fun. Mrs. Romano helped me make it through art without getting behind, also. I often took too much time on one art piece and fell behind, without her I would probably be failing art. This year I also enjoyed tech class. During tech I got to design and construct a catapult. FACS was super fun as well. I loved learning about cooking, taking care of things and sewing.
This school year we also went on some exciting field trips. One field trip I enjoyed was our trip to the food pantry. Few people signed up to volunteer and help the less fortunate.  We waited on people and helped serve food. enjoyed this because the people that came in were so friendly and nice.I also really liked going on our Boston trip. We went to Boston for almost a whole day. The only thing I didn't like about this was that we had to wake up so early.
I enjoyed seventh grade, and I won't ever forget about all the great experiences I've had this year. 7th grade helped me make so many new memories.  I hope that 8th grade will as awesome as this year.

Field Trip

Today my classmates and I took a trip to Boston. While we're in Boston we are going on a trolley tour around historical parts of Boston, and the Boston Museum of Science. I'm happy that we're going on this field trip since not every house is going somewhere on a field trip. We're lucky that we're going to be out of school for the day and enjoying Boston.
We´ll did many things on the field trip, so we had to get to the school early so we can do everything. We have to meet at the school at 5:30am. After we left the school we drive to Boston, which will took about 3 hours. Once we get there at around 9am, we go on about a 2 hour trolley ride around Boston. After that we went to the Boston Museum of science. There we completed an assignment for math and science that was really easy. Then we left Boston and drove back to the middle school, at about 8pm.
While we´re on the field trip I'll be staying with my group of other students and one chaperone. My group consists of my friend Molly, Dean and Corbin. While we were in the museum and on the rest of the field trip we had to stay together. We also sat with each other on the bus ride. So we were with our group for the whole trip.
This was definitally a super fun and cool trip. I would do it again if I could. I hope that we'll go on one like it next year in 8th grade

Pine Bush

Today we went on a field trip for science to the Albany Pine Bush since we are learning about it in science tutorial. We're writing an essay about the Pine Bush. We had to write about different species that lived in it, the history of it, and how fire plays a role in the ecosystem.
For the field trip we were girdling aspen trees. Girdling a tree is when you cut through the bark all the way around the tree, so you can kill it. We were girdling the aspen trees because they were overpopulated in the Pine Bush. So we worked to kill some of them to hopefully decreased the population of the trees
Today the Blue group (my group) and green went on the field trip. I was excited since it's always nice to go on field trips and get out of school for a little bit. We put on our protective gear to keep us safe from ticks and thorns. After that we got onto the bus and drove to the Pine Bush. When we got there we went into the woods and the Pine Bush staff explained what we were doing. It looked easy when they were doing it, but it was definitely a lot harder than it looked. I eventually peeled off the bark and finished my first tree. Then we had a little break, which meant we had a half hour left. I started a new tree and almost finished it. Before I could we had to go back to school, which we all were relieved about. By the end I gurgled about 20 trees!

The One and Only Ivan

WARNING: Spoiler Alert
In 5th grade I read the book "The One and Only Ivan." My teacher made us "Respond to our reading" for homework every week. Each week it was a different question and he graded us out of 4 points. I was reading through my old notebooks and found a piece that I really liked. Our assignment was to become one of the characters from the story and write a poem or note from their point of view. I wanted to share my piece with you. I wrote from the view of Stella.
The pain ached throughout my body, but mostly my foot. I knew I wouldn't make it until the morning. All I could think about was "Who's going to take care of Ruby?" I knew Ivan would do anything for me, but this was too much. I thought for a while. I whispered over to Ivan's domain and asked him to promise me something. I never asked him to promise me anything because a promise is forever. "I promise Stella." I thought, this is what Ivan would saw because he is such a great friend, he would do anything for me. I didn't say anything for a long time. I knew I would leave behind everything. Would I be missed, or just forgotten? "Never mind Ivan." I said. As I went to put my head back down on the hay I was laying on, I saw Ruby's trunk move. Like she was reaching for something that was not there. "You want me to take care of Ruby." He knew that I couldn't leave her alone. As I nodded, I told Ivan that she needed a safe place, not here. "I promise Stella, I promise on my word as a Silver Back. As the air becomes thicker, I think how I had a wonderful life with my best friend, the one and only Ivan.
I loved this book so much I read is 3 times that year. I was so surprised when I found this piece hiding away in my closet. I really liked the way I wrote this in 5th grade and I hope you do too!

A Day In My Life

My weeks are usually very busy. Mostly everyday is stressful and confusing. Here is usually what a day in my life would be like
On a normal Tuesday morning I wake up at about 6:30-6:50. In the morning I have to pack my stuff for school. Once I get put of the shower it is about 6:45 or 7. Once I'm out of the shower I pick out my outfit and go downstairs for breakfast.
When I go down stairs my dad will be watching the news and I start to make my breakfast. While I am making my breakfast I am helping my mother make my lunch. Once I finish breakfast it's about 7:30 and I head upstairs to brush my teeth and get ready for the day. I get back downstairs and it is about 8 so I do anything that I need to like put my taekwondo uniform in my bag because I go there after school. After that I am ready for my mom or the bus to drive me to school.
Once I get to school I have a normal day at school. When my friends Reagan, Kilian and I get on a special bus to go to taekwondo. We get to do little homework before our parents pick us up for dinner. All of us go to a local deli until 6:15 when we go back to taekwondo for a demonstration practice. Straight after that is advanced poomsae practice which usually ends at 8:30. I get home at approximately 8:50-9. With an hour for homework before bed.
My days are sometimes stressful with not a lot of time for things. Also restless hours but I manage to make it through the day

My Birthday!

Yesterday was my birthday! I was born April 17, 2003. Yesterday was so crazy and fun it was unbelievable. I was at a volleyball tournament all day and we came in 3rd. But the party even started a day before.
My whole volleyball team drove down the day before our tournament. We met up at a Wendy's across from our hotel. Then when everyone was there we drove back over to the hotel to go swimming, We swam for a while then the parents ordered pizza. We ate and everyone brought treats. After that everyone changed out of their wet clothes and came into my family's room. We hung out in there for a while, we ate candy, listened to music and played volleyball. It was so much fun.
The next day my whole team met in the lobby for breakfast before blasting off for our tournament. Once we got there we all started warming up for our first game. We played a super long day of volleyball to place third in the gold bracket. After we finished I went to Panera with some of my really close friends.
My birthday was so fun, I would do it again if I could

4th Quarter

April eleventh was the first day of the fourth/final quarter of the school year. There isn't much of a change in my schedule. Instead of having FACS (Family And Consumer Science) I now have art. Besides that there isn't any difference since last quarter we switched from Health to Music. I'm excited for art, since I enjoyed it last year, but I'll miss FACS because I did enjoy the labs.
This quarter I have art with Mrs. Romano, which is different from who I had last year. The class is ten weeks long. During these ten weeks we will be learning how to create a piece of artwork using the elements of line, color, shape, texture and space arrangement. We will also be drawing, printmaking, sculpting, making collages and painting using very different techniques. I'm excited to do the calligraphy project because it looks super fun and interesting.
This quarter I'm ending FACS and starting art instead. I enjoyed FACS a lot this year. In the food labs we made fruit smoothies, muffins and pizza bagels. I have to say that my favorite food I made was the pumpkin chocolate chip muffins. In the sewing part of the class we made bags (mine was blue and green). The bag is useful and I use it for a lot of things. I got a good grade on all the projects so it also brought my average up.
Overall I enjoyed FACS but I'm excited to start with art since it's been so long since I've had it. I enjoy the little change in my schedule that makes a difference.

New York State Championships

Today I competed in the 2015 Taekwondo New York State Championships. I am currently a 1st degree black belt at Guilderland Martial Arts. At Guilderland Martial Arts (GMA) I am on the poomsae team. Poomsae is a floor sequence containing blocks, kicks and attacks.
We drove down to Queens Friday night and ended up getting there at about 9:30 pm. I hung out with all my friends that went. The next morning I got ready and went downstairs to eat breakfast. We got to Queens College where the tournament was at about 8:30 am. We waited until my division was called at about 10 am. Once my division was called I went to my ring and waited. I would be competing in poomsae, breaking and pair poomsae (with another person.) I competed in breaking first, I got 3 out of about 10 people. Next poomsae. Poomsae always got me nervous. I start freaking out but my coach Mrs. Toeg always calms me down before performing. I performed my poomsae, thinking I did better then ever and placed 3 out of 18 other girls. Later that day around 3:30 pm I got called to the same ring to perform pairs poomsae. My partner Jason and I were both up against the kids who got first in our division. We did pretty well even though we only practiced together twice. Together we tried our best, we stayed at the same pace mostly the whole time. At the end of the day I went home with 1 silver and 2 bronze.
Overall I think I tried my best and did a good job. I was proud of myself at the end of the day. I had a fun day with all of my friends. Can't wait to do it again next year!

"A Monster Calls" By Patrick Ness

In Language Arts we started reading "A Monster Calls" by Patrick Ness. Although the book was written by Patrick Ness, the original idea for the story was by Siobhan Dowd. Before Siobhan could start the book she died of cancer. So Siobhan's editor gave Patrick Ness permission to finish the book for her. Patrick Ness continued with Siobhan's idea and finished the story. The story also has illustrations by Jim Kay.
It is about a thirteen-year-old boy named who lives in England with his divorced Mum. His name is Conor O'Malley. Conor's Mum is diagnosed with cancer.  Conor has to struggle through living with his grandma (who he doesn't really like) all while being visited by a Yew tree in his back garden. It comes to life at night at 12:07 and a terrifying nightmare that Conor wouldn't dare telling anybody about.
So far I really like the book. The book did start with Conor meeting the monster, so I liked that it didn't take a while for the book to get interesting. I also thought that the story has multiple different things happening at once (his Mum's cancer, the Yew tree, and the nightmare) so there's always something happening. I also think the story is well written and descriptive, even though it doesn't need to be very descriptive since there are talented illustrations on most pages. I've been enjoying the book so car and I'm interested to see what will happen through the rest of the story.

St. Baldrick's

This Sunday a few of my friends, Molly, Life and I all shaved our heads to help to help raise money for childhood cancer research.  We shaved our heads at Westmere Fire Department for St. Baldrick's. I had shaved my head for five years. This would me Molly and I last year shaving our heads.  I'm the beginning of the year we were both very positive that we didn't want to shave our heads but then we started talking to each other about it.  We both said that if one of us shaved  our head that the other one of us would.  So we both decided to have our heads shaved together.
It felt like Sunday morning was the most stressful day for my life.  I would be shaving my head at 2:20 so I had to wait a long time. My mother wanted us to get there right when the event started at 10 am to help out a little. I wasn't that  nervous.  I didn't really even think about shaving my head because I had shaved it the previous 4 years.  I couldn't wait to shave my head because I love the way I after it is shaved. I feel awesome inside because I know that I'm doing something special that many people don't have the courage to do. We got to the fire department around 10:30 am an I started selling shirts with my friend.  Once I when Molly got there.  I found he and we both started talking about how excited we were to shave our heads.  As it go closer to the time that I was shaving my head more people I knew started to show up, including some friends and my parents friends.
It was 2:15 and Molly and I got really nervous.  Our names were called to go up to the stage to shave our heads.  Molly and I wanted to sit next to each other so we did and we both got a little bit more calm.  They were about to start and Molly and I looked at each other and smiled.  They then turned the razors on and started to shave our heads.  I was smiling at my family and friends the whole entire time.  It is such and awesome feeling to be shaving my head.  Once they were done Molly and I walked off the stage together.  We were both really proud of each other and were happy for each other.

Recently I have been interested in volleyball. I play for a team called the Northeast Thunder. There are about 12 girls on my team. We had recently had a volleyball tournament. I'm used to the because my sister used to have plenty. Here's what's like to go/play in a volleyball tournament.
You have to get up early if you don't stay in a hotel. So I got up at about 6:30mto get everything ready and I could be there at 7:30 to warm up. Our first game was at 8 am. We played our first game, best 2 out of 3. We won. Next we would have to work the upcoming game. Working for another game involves many people, 1 person has to keep score, 1 person has to mimic the ref, 2 people have to see if the ball is in or out of bounds and 2 people have to keep track of everyone(subs, fouls, etc.) After we worked we had 2 games off. So mostly everyone slept  because they were so tired and ate. After that we had to play 2 games in a row. We won both of our games. Once we finished that we had to work again. Then we had 4 games off the court. My whole team played games and ate. It was really fun. We played a few more games, won most of them but lost 1. Since we one most of them we moved on to finals. We played 2 rounds and we were tied. Whoever won the next round was the champions for our age division. With hard efforts and determination we won the finals. We got medals for our glory.
I had a really fun day. I really enjoy playing in volleyball tournaments and being with my team because they're fun and nice. I can't wait until our next volleyball tournament because I love them so much.

My family owns a bunny named Lucy. She's a she's black and her ears droop down so they almost touch the floor. We got her the day before Easter and my dad brought her home as a surprise to our whole family.  My sister was 14 and I was 11. My sister and I kind of suspected something was different but wasn't expecting this.  My mom had no clue this was happening either. We had a bunny when I was 8 but was medically challenged so didn't make it long.
My whole family and I had gone to a Hockey game that day. My father left early because he said he had a lot of work to catch up on (not.) We stayed until the end because we had too. It was a Taekwondo demonstration we had been there to perform in at the end. So once the hockey game was over we went to the mall to buy a few things. A few things turned into many and we spent twice the time then we wanted to there. By the time we were done it it was about 7 pm. My mother, sister, father and I had been invited to a bonfire later that night with our friends. Everyone thought it was a good idea to go. On our way to the bonfire my mother didn't feel good so we turned around and went home at about 9 pm. We were all disappointed but we didn't know what we were going to see when we got home. My mother, sister and I were so surprised by the bunny in the middle of our living room. Bridget, my sister was very attached to our other bunny Mason. When she saw Lucy she was very sad because it reminded her of him and she wasn't ready to let go of him.  She instantly ran away from Lucy, historically crying. I invited her best friend over, with the permitting of my parents to help her gain the courage to meet our new bunny.

By the time I met Lucy I loved her. It took a long time to think of a name for her. We had to pick something everyone agreed with, we ended up with Lucy. Lucy is a big part of my life I love her very much. I love playing with her as well. My life would be very different without her in it.

Sam Frederick's!

Sam Frederick's is one of my best friends. We met at the beginning of 6th grade because we were in the same classes. I don't know where I would be without him. He's always here for me no matter what.
Sam and I met through our mutual friend Lili. I was friends with Lili and so was Sam. At the beginning of the year, Sam sat with Lili, me and some of our other friends one day at lunch. I recognized him because we had most of our classes together. We never really talked, so we first gad to get to know each other before we could really be friends. Towards the second quarter we became closer friends because we sat next to each other in our core classes ( Math, Science, Social Studies, Language Arts.) We became to grow closer as friends. Now we're very close friends and I do everything with Sam.
This year I was on Sam's team again. We're very close friends now because we hung out over the summer and continued talking. Even though were in no classes at all together we're still close friends. I still see him at lunch and between class. We're still good friends and it'd be awkward to imagine what these two years of my life would be like without him

Black Belt

Today my best friend tested for his black belt. We both compete in a sport called taekwondo. His name is Kilian. He had been doing taekwondo for over 3 years. I have known Kilian since about 3rd grade. This was a very special moment for me to watch him get his black belt. We had a whole day of training with the almost black belts.
The whole day started at 8 a.m. Everyone showed up at and we started training right away. We started doing poomsae. Poomsae is a traditional floor sequence. Usually there are only 8 poomsae. So we did all 8 poomsae twice, in total we did 16. After about an hour of that at 9 o'clock we ate breakfast for about 30 minutes. Then after that we continued with stick fighting and other self defense moves. I really enjoy sticks because not a lot of people use them and they can be found in our everyday life. At about noon we sat and ate lunch. Once we finished lunch we played games so all together it took about a hour. The black belt test started at 4 p.m so we had to start preparing the soon to be black belts. So after lunch we worked on their 4 techniques that they would be breaking boards and cement with. Each person had one power foot kick, one speed foot kick, one speed hand technique and one power hand technique to (break a cement with.) We went over everything that they would have to do and by the time we were done it was about time for the test.

Overall the whole day was great and everyone did wonderfully. After the test was over we had a celebratory dinner for everyone and their families. I had a really fun day close with all of my friends. I can't wait until another black belt test. I am very proud of my best friend Kilian!

Doing Well In School

Lately I've noticed some key things about getting good grades in your core classes (Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, Math.) I really like all of my core class teachers this year. I wanted to share some things to help you as well.

LA: Pay lots of attention in class. Always read plenty of books and make sure you're always have a new book. Also make sure to raise your hand a lot to answer questions. Usually you get projects in LA a lot, so make sure to do your best work. Never slack off. Always do your best and nothing under average. Some ways to raise your grades are ask about extra credit. You can always read more books and observe things that the authors do that you can improve.

SciencePay attention to your teacher talking and make sure you understand science. Science is usually the core class that some people have trouble with. Make sure you pay extra attention because Science can usually bore people sometimes then they get lost.  Some things that I do to understand science better is I pay very close attention to the notes and the labs that we do. Some things that you could do to raise your grade are extra credit or stay after to get review.
SSPay attention in class and always listen to your teacher. Make sure you know what's happening and you're not confusing events. Ex: American Revolution. Make sure that you know what century it was in, who won, why the war happened in the first place. Sometimes you get projects in SS that are worth many points so make sure you try your best to get good grades on them. Some ways to raise your grades are extra credit or stay after. You can also look things up in your textbook if you have one.

Math : Pay lots of attention in math and make sure you understand what the teacher is saying .Make sure you try to not get lost. Ask lots of questions if you do get lost so you understand and won't get confused on the homework.  Do your homework as soon as you can. Also do your homework as soon as you get home or stay after to finish it. If you don't understand email your teacher or go in the next day and ask her. You can try to raise your grade if your unhappy with it by asking you teacher about extra credit or staying after to make some things up.

I hope these thing help you. Paying attention and raising your hand to answer questions is key to getting good grades. Don't be afraid to ask for extra help. In the end it can really help everything you do.

Soup Kitchen

Today me and some people in my LA class went to the soup kitchen. We left school about 20 minutes into class. Everyone got on the bus to the St. John's Outreach Center with their lunch and jacket. The ride was about 30 minutes long. We were trained on what to do and how to do it. The woman instructing us told us the most important thing was to smile, it makes people feel welcomed. I learned a lot today, it was wonderful.
The lady that taught us and another gentleman stood by the door greeting the people walking in. They made everyone feel welcomed and chatted with them and showed them a seat. They opened the door and let the people waiting to enter, come in. Before we greeted them and asked them what the wanted, everyone said a prayer together. Then we started. First we asked them what they wanted to drink. Once we returned with their drink, we then asked if they would like a salad. If they said yes we would go grab it. When they finished we asked them if they would like the meal we were serving that day, which was pulled pork with beans. If they wanted they could have seconds. Next it was time for dessert, if they wanted they could have cookies or pudding. When the person sitting there got up and left, we picked up their dishes and replaced them with new ones once the next person came and sat down there. I repeated these steps for about 1 hour and 30 minutes.
I learned many new things today, and enjoyed it a lot. I saw things from a new perspective. I thought of how I took many things for granted and couldn't any more after seeing how other people live. I also thought of how thankful I am for everything I have today. Helping people today made me feel good inside, many people told me how thankful they were for me volunteering my time. I would do this almost everyday if I got the chance.

Car Safety

For Christmas every year my family travels to Poughkepsie. On our ride down, I observed many people using their phones while driving. I started thinking how unsafe it was. I looked up how many people die in car crashes per year. The answer, 1.3 million people. An addition 20-50 million are injured or disabled. I couldn't live knowing that.
Later knowing about that I wondered many things, like how many Americans died, or how many people that compares to etc. But most importantly I wondered how many of those 1.3 millions peoples lives I could save. Me, a 12 year old, almost 13. How could I save 1.3 million lives? Stop people from using their phones while driving. I'm planning on informing my community of the information I consumed. I am now working on introducing my community to car safety.
I believe that in 2016 we need 1.3 million to decrease, by a lot. The numbers of deaths is unacceptable. I hope that I can help my community change car safety. Together we can turn 1.3 million people into 0. I'm hoping that by the time I am 20, many things will change with car safety.

Black Belt

On November 15, 2014 I received my black belt from Guilderland Martial Arts. At that time I had been practicing Taekwondo for about 4 years. I have been so interested in Taekwondo that I enjoy going to competitions and competing. I have competed in the New York State Championships for 3 years, going on 4th this year. In 2013 I went to Chicago Illinois for the 2013 National Championship. At that time, I was not a black belt, but the belt under. This was an experience of a lifetime.
The National championship was held on a Saturday, July 4. It was in the summer so we left on Thursday. Since it was almost a 13 hour drive, we stopped at Cleveland, Ohio. We stayed overnight, and went to a science museum that night before we left in the morning. Then we drove to Chicago Friday morning. My family had driven with about 5 other families.  Their children all competing. That night we all went out for food and got pumped for the next day when most of us were competing. I personally was so excited about what was coming the next day. The next day I got up at 8 o'clock  and were at the place where I was competing. I felt nervous and scared, I knew I would be alright though. I ended up waiting in line to compete by 11 o'clock. I was competing in Poomsae, which is a series of stances, blocks and strikes. There were 38 girls in my division, so half the girls could be cut and not be able to go to the second round. My goal was to at least make it to the second round. I did my first poomsae and thankfully made it to the second round. I hadn't thought I would or could make it this far. I believe that no one thought that I could make it this far. I wasn't thinking about my Poomsae the second time I went up to perform. My eyes were focused like a hawk on it's prey. I knew I couldn't let anyone down, I felt like everyone's weight was on my shoulders. I ended up placing 5th. I wasn't happy with my place. On our trip home, my mom was telling me I got 5th place in the whole nation. She kept repeating it, until I realized. I'm a 5th place National Champion, out of all of the 38 girls, I was 5th. Any other girl would've wanted this. I'm thankful everyday for the opportunity I had, and I achieved my goal.
I'll remember this trip and series of memories for the rest of my life. This was the best moment of my life. If I had the chance to relive this July 4, I would do it everyday. I loved spending time with my best friends, doing the sport I love. I'm thankful everyday for the chance to experience what I at this tournament. This was by far the best day of my life.
